To: Dr. Norman R. Smith, Interim President of Suffolk University, and the Suffolk University Board of Trustees.
The Beacon Hill Institute (BHI) at Suffolk University publicizes and propagates poorly conducted research, which works to undermine progressive policies throughout the country – especially those centered on energy and the environment. BHI has extensive influence: its “research” has been used in policy and legislative debates throughout the country, despite the fact that their model for analysis has been proven to be flawed and biased. BHI also has ties to industrialist mega-donors Charles and David Koch, whose related foundations gave over $800,000 to Suffolk University in recent years.
Suffolk University students are held to high academic standards in all disciplines. These same standards should be applied to BHI’s research. BHI is weakening the reputation of Suffolk University with its substandard research and partisan bias, and diminishing the value of a Suffolk University degree in a competitive job market.
We call on you to:
- Fully disclose how much money the Koch brothers have donated to Suffolk University and the Beacon Hill Institute and what specifically this money has funded.
- Stop taking money from the Koch brothers to fund either the Beacon Hill Institute or Suffolk University at large.
- Review Beacon Hill Institute’s research methodology to ensure that their standards of academic integrity align with the standards expected of a university of Suffolk’s stature.
